How to specify pad printing for packs and components
Print quality depends on the artwork, ink system, surface, component support and agreed inspection method.
Use pad printing where the surface and graphic suit the process
Pad printing transfers ink from an etched image plate to a component using a flexible silicone pad. The pad can conform to some curved, recessed or irregular surfaces, which makes the process useful for compact graphics, symbols and text on packs or components that are difficult to print by a simple flat contact method. Suitability still depends on the printable area, curvature, surface energy, material, required opacity and resistance after curing.
The engineering review should begin with the actual artwork and the exact component. Fine lines, large solid areas, multiple colours and close registration impose different requirements. The component must be located repeatably without damage, and the fixture should allow loading, unloading, cleaning and changeover without creating an avoidable operator risk.

Test the finished result under its real use condition
Reference samples should be produced using production components and the proposed ink and preparation route. The acceptance method may include position, completeness, colour, legibility, adhesion or resistance, but each check needs a defined procedure and timing. A rub or adhesion result can change with cure time, substrate condition and test method, so the quotation should identify what is to be demonstrated rather than promising an undefined “permanent” mark.
Where the requirement is variable data, batch coding or printing onto a moving production line, compare ink-jet coding and hot-foil coding as separate processes.
