Choosing the right labelling format

Labelling machinery is strongly influenced by container shape, label size, roll direction, material stiffness, adhesive behaviour and the required label position. Round bottles may need wrap-around control, flat containers often need side or front/back labelling, while boxes, pouches and lids may require top, bottom or flat-surface applicators.

Good labelling outcomes depend on product handling as well as the applicator. Containers need consistent spacing, stable presentation and suitable surface condition. Changes in label stock or container finish can affect creasing, bubbling and registration, so samples should be reviewed before the machine format is finalised.

Confirm the container geometry and presentation

Accurate label placement begins before the label is dispensed. Round bottles need controlled rotation and consistent diameter; flat or shaped containers need a repeatable face and datum; flexible pouches and cartons may require flattening, feeding or support. Supply the smallest and largest formats, including normal manufacturing variation, and identify seams, mould marks, handles, tapers, recesses and unstable bases. The conveyor and guide arrangement must present the pack without covering the intended label area or distorting the surface.

Document the complete label roll

Provide label width and length, gap, web width, core diameter, roll outside diameter, winding direction, backing-paper type, label material, adhesive and any transparent sections. A sensor that performs well with an opaque paper label may need a different setup for a clear label or unusual gap. Label stiffness and release behaviour affect peeling, while container finish, condensation, dust, oil or product residue can affect adhesion after application.

The trial should check dispense, registration, wipe-down pressure and finished appearance. Observe leading-edge position, skew, bubbles, creasing, flagging, overlap and the relationship between multiple labels. For wrap-around or front-and-back work, check the pack through its full rotation or side transfer rather than only measuring one reference point. Where coding, vision inspection or print-and-apply is required, confirm data source, print area, contrast, verification method and reject handling as part of the same test.

Test changeover and running conditions

Record the settings and change parts required for each format. Include roll replacement, web threading, sensor setup, recipe selection, guide adjustment and first-off approval. Test at start-up, steady running, after a pause and following a label-roll change. The acceptance method should state how position and appearance will be assessed and which container and label variations are included.

Why does label position move during a production run?

Label position can move when container spacing, orientation, conveyor grip, sensor detection, web tracking, product build-up or reel tension changes. Mark the direction and timing of the movement before adjusting several settings, because random and progressive errors often have different causes.

What label-roll information is needed for a machinery review?

Provide label and backing dimensions, gap, roll direction, core size, maximum reel diameter, material, transparency, adhesive and any print-registration marks. Supply production reels because sample sheets do not reproduce web release, tension or sensor behaviour.

Can transparent labels and containers be detected reliably?

Transparent materials can be detected, but sensor choice and setup depend on the label, backing, container and background. A real reel and production containers are needed to confirm the detection margin and whether special sensing or registration features are required.
