How should containers be presented to packaging machinery?

Containers should reach each machine in a stable, repeatable orientation with controlled spacing and without unacceptable damage. The handling method must reflect the base, centre of gravity, stiffness, neck or opening position, surface finish and the effect of the product inside the pack.

A container that stands reliably on a bench may become unstable during acceleration, braking, guide transitions or product filling. Empty and filled packs may need different support because weight distribution and product movement change the behaviour.

Use drawings to establish dimensions and physical samples to evaluate stiffness, friction, transparency, decoration and tolerance. Include supplier variants and the least stable format in trials.

Why do empty bottles handle differently from filled bottles?

Empty bottles are lighter and may be more affected by airflow, static, guides and conveyor transitions. Filled bottles have a different centre of gravity and may be affected by product movement. Test both relevant states where equipment interfaces occur before and after filling.

When are side belts or timing screws used?

Side belts or timing screws can control spacing, stabilise packs or create a timed infeed, but their suitability depends on the pack surface, shape and acceptable contact force. They should not deform or mark the container.

How are unstable containers managed?
