A practical route from product and pack information to a testable machinery specification.
Plan the application before selecting equipment
A useful machinery specification describes what the production process must achieve, not just the machine name. Start with the product, its behaviour during handling, the primary container or pack, the closure or seal, the label or printed information and the route into the finished outer pack.
Document the current method because operator judgement often compensates for variation that is not obvious in a data sheet. Note how product is prepared and transferred, how packs and closures are presented, where checks occur, how rejects are handled and what causes rework.
A headline output target is not enough on its own. State the batch pattern, planned run time, format mix, replenishment method and changeover frequency. These factors determine whether the constraint is dosing, feeding, cleaning, pack presentation or downstream removal.

Separate mandatory requirements from preferences
Mark each requirement as essential, desirable or future-facing. This prevents optional features from obscuring the process risks that must be solved now and allows alternative machinery routes to be compared fairly.
Where a precise number is stated, record how it will be measured and under which conditions. Fill, torque, label position and output can appear different when the product, pack or test method changes.
Define the boundaries of supply
Identify who provides product-feed tanks, pumps, extraction, conveyors, coding, inspection, guarding interfaces, network connections and production data. Clear boundaries reduce late changes.
Use the same brief through the project
The requirement set should guide quotation, design review, sample trials, FAT, installation, commissioning and handover. Record changes so final acceptance reflects the agreed product and pack.

Can a quote be prepared from photographs alone?
Photographs help an early review, but physical samples and product information are normally needed where dosing, sealing, torque, label application or pack transfer depends on material behaviour.
How many samples should be supplied?
Supply enough to represent the smallest, largest and most difficult formats together with normal manufacturing variation. The quantity depends on the trial sequence and test method.
Should future formats be included?
Yes where they are reasonably likely, because they may affect tooling, adjustment range, conveyor width, recipes and footprint.
Who should approve acceptance criteria?
Production, quality, engineering and safety representatives should agree the checks relevant to their responsibilities.
