Choosing bag sealing machinery for flexible packs

The correct sealer is determined by the packaging material, seal area, product, production method and finished-pack acceptance test.

Start with the film structure and filled-bag condition

Bag sealing cannot be specified reliably from bag width alone. Provide the complete laminate or film specification, thickness, sealant layer, gussets, zipper or valve details, bag size range and the condition of the seal area after filling. Powders, oils, product fragments, folds and trapped air can all affect the result. The filled pack may also need support so its weight does not pull on the hot seal while it is being formed or cooled.

Define seal acceptance before comparing machines

Temperature, pressure and dwell time interact with material, contamination and cooling. A machine setting is not a universal seal specification. Agree the visible requirements and any strength, leak or integrity test relevant to the product and distribution route. Record the test method, conditioning time and sample preparation so results can be repeated.

For continuous production, review the upstream filler, discharge height, bag spacing and the way the operator presents the top of the bag. Downstream coding, checkweighing, metal detection or case packing may affect conveyor height and pack orientation. If the product is dosed directly into film, review vertical form-fill-seal machinery and pouch and bag application guidance.
